Argentina national team manager Lionel Scaloni has explained his reasoning behind snubbing Inter striker Mauro Icardi in his 23 man squad for next month’s Copa America.

“It is an important moment for our national team and we believe that we have called up the best players at the moment,” he began his press conference following the squad announcement.

“Some have been excluded due to injury but will always be taken into consideration in future.

“You always have doubts when you have so many good players to choose from. It is difficult to please everyone, but the final decision is always to think for the best of the team.

“Our belief is that any player can be called up to the national team, there is no prohibition for anyone, having said that, the exclusions depend on the choices we had to make. For a manager this is the most difficult thing to do but we have no doubts about the choices we have made.”
