Matias Vecino has admitted Inter’s qualification for the Champions League last season was far less comfortable than it should have been.

The Nerazzurri secured a second straight top-four finish in Serie A last season but were left sweating on a final day victory against Empoli to keep rivals Milan behind them.

Speaking from Uruguay’s training camp ahead of the upcoming Copa America, Vecino blamed Inter’s inconsistency for a stressful end to the campaign.

“Our main objective for the season was qualifying for the Champions League, but we made too much hard work of it,” the midfielder told reporters.

“We had a squad capable of finishing higher up the table but we weren’t consistent enough. Next year we want to do better.”

Vecino also endorsed the imminent arrival of his international teammate Diego Godin from Atletico Madrid.

“Nothing is official yet and I cannot make it so if Diego hasn’t himself,” Vecino added.

“I know they’re talking and I’d be happy if he joined Inter for what he represents as a player and a person. I hope it happens, but I can’t say anything else at the moment.”
