In an interview with ESPN, Lautaro Martinez charted the early years of his career as a footballer among other topics including the Copa America.

“At first I played in defence, then I gradually advanced up the field and became a striker. My dad was a professional footballer so he used give me some advice,” he began.

“At 16-years-old I moved to Racing Club. It was not easy at first but then it was all good. Everything changed for me after a tournament in Mar de la Plata. I guess I can say that that is when my career really started.

He then recalled what Inter legend Diego Milito told him at Racing Club when he retired: “At the time of his retirement he turned to me and said, ‘Go, now it’s your turn’.”

He concluded the interview by sharing his pride at being part of Argentina’s squad for the Copa America.

“It is fundamental for me to be part of the team, I want to prove my worth.”
