Inter face last-minute competition from city rivals Milan as they chase Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
Barella has already agreed to join Inter and is waiting for the two clubs to reach an agreement, with Sebastiano Esposito and Marco Pompetti the two latest players mooted to be included in the deal.
Milan are awaiting sanctions from UEFA after breaching Financial Fair Play rules and do not have a head coach or sporting director in place, leaving them with a huge amount of ground to make up.
“Zvonimir Boban and Paolo Maldini view Barella as the best Italian midfielder in his position and will ask Elliott for an important economic sacrifice to increase the quality of their squad,” Gazzetta reported this morning.
“The only way Milan could hope to get the better of Inter in this battle is by offering Cagliari €40 million in cash, with Inter unwilling to exceed €30 for the moment.
“All the exit polls are still backing Inter to win this particular competition.”
Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in signing the 22-year-old, but Barella is unlikely to change his mind after picking Inter some time ago.
