Francesco Totti today confirmed he tried to bring Antonio Conte to Roma this summer, before he eventually agreed to join Inter.

Totti held an hour-long press conference this afternoon to inform reporters he was leaving the Giallorossi after spending two years in a managerial role.

The former Italy striker said Conte had ‘given his OK’ to join but then changed his mind after various problems emerged.

“Conte was the only coach and myself and chief executive officer Guido Fienga spoke to,” Totti revealed.

“We called him after I had told Guido he was the only coach who could properly change Roma.

“Antonio was going to come here and revolutionise everything but he wanted consistency. He wanted reassurance he would have a side that was good enough to at least finish fourth.

“I would have stayed at Roma if Conte had come, but even if the club had appointed their own coach after calling me first to ask for my opinion.”

Roma officially appointed former Shakhtar Donetsk coach Paulo Fonseca last week, leading Totti to accuse the club of never consulting him on key decisions.

Conte was unveiled as Inter’s new head coach on a three-year deal at the end of last month, having previously confirmed Roma’s interest in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.
