Diego Simeone has assured Atletico Madrid supporters he is not worried at the prospect of Diego Godin leaving to join Inter.

Godin will sign for the Nerazzurri on a free transfer once his contract expires on 30 June and is expected to replace another former Atletico defender in Miranda.

The Uruguayan has been arguably Atleti’s most important player since Simeone arrived in 2011 but El Cholo insists there is a future after the 34-year-old.

“Godin is leaving but we have the likes of Jose Maria Gimenez, Saul Niguez and Koke,” Simeone told Fox Sports Argentina.

“I think they’ll be the future leaders at this club. True leadership is about having and giving other people balance.”

Godin joined Atleti from Villarreal in 2010 and has gone on to make 380 appearances in all competitions for the Colchoneros.

The defender scored the goal which secured them an historic La Liga title in 2014, when Atleti drew 1-1 with rivals Barcelona on the final day of the season.
