Milan have developed a strong interest in signing Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic in the upcoming Summer transfer window according to a report from Corriere dello Sport.

The Rossoneri look set to challenge their city rivals Inter for the signature of the Croatian midfielder, who is no stranger to the city having previously played for Inter.

Milan technical director Paolo Maldini and chief of football operations Zvonimir Boban are understood to have met with Los Blancos officials over the 25-year-old, just like Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta and sporting director Piero Ausilio did.

Kovacic is believed to no longer be part of Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane’s plans at the Santiago Bernabeu and spent the past season out on loan at Premier League side Chelsea.

The 2018 World Cup runner-up made no less than 51 appearances across all competitions whilst on loan at the blues and whilst he was unable to score, he did tally two assists during his spell with the club.
