Inter’s chief executive Alessandro Antonello today hit back at Milan mayor Beppe Sala by saying the city deserved a better stadium than San Siro.
Sala earlier told reporters he would not allow the clubs to knock the ground down and build a new stadium before the 2026 Winter Olympics.
However, both clubs want construction work to start at the end of next season, meaning a standoff is likely.
“We need to look to the future,” Antonello said from the International Olympic Committee’s headquarters.
“We need to give the city a stadium which is worthy of Milan as a whole. We need to think about Milan’s future.”
Antonello and Milan owner Paolo Scaroni attended the IOC’s 134th session in Switzerland today as Milan and Cortino d’Ampezzo were awarded the 2026 games.
La Repubblica last week reported Milan and Inter wanted to submit a planning application for a new stadium before the 2022-23 season next week.
It remains to be seen how Sala and the rest of the council will react to such a proposal.
