Inter and Milan could not have played at San Siro during building work if they had chosen to redo the current stadium, according to the Rossoneri’s owner Paolo Scaroni.

The clubs want to knock down the ground and build a new modern stadium, although city mayor today Beppe Sala warned they would need to wait until after 2026.

Scaroni described San Siro as ‘an icon’ and explained the problems behind opting to develop the existing San Siro.

“The main reason we want to build a new stadium is because we can’t have two teams playing in a stadium that’s being renovated,” Scaroni said.

“It would be impossible to get the building work done if both us and Inter were playing there every week.

“San Siro is San Siro, it’s known around the world. Nobody would want us to move to another part of the city.”

Inter and Milan are expected to submit a planning application to Milan city council in the next two weeks, in the hope they can build a new ground for the 2022-23 season.
