The mayor of Milan today reiterated he will not let Inter and Milan knock down San Siro and replace it with a new stadium until 2026.

Giuseppe Sala was angered by comments Milan president Paolo Scaroni made yesterday, publicly confirming the Rossoneri’s intention to demolish the current stadium.

Scaroni, Sala and Inter chief executive Alessandro Antonello were all in Lausanne yesterday as Milan and Cortino d’Ampezzo were awarded the 2026 Winter Olympics.

“They could have waited a moment or two before making those comments,” Sala was quoted as saying by Ansa.

“That said, perhaps it was the right moment for me to clarify a few things.

“I want to be clear about this given the delicacy of the situation: San Siro will not be touched until 2026.”

San Siro belongs to the city council and therefore Sala has the power to deny Inter and Milan their dream of building a new stadium before then.

The clubs have not submitted their official proposals yet but it is thought they wanted to have a new ground built on the same land for the 2023-24 season.
