Lothar Matthaus: “Inter Was The Most Thrilling Experience Of My Career”

Inter legend Lothar Matthaus last night described his four-year spell playing for the Nerazzurri as ‘the most thrilling of my career’.

Matthaus was part of the Inter team that won the 1988-89 Serie A title under Giovanni Trapattoni, scoring a decisive free-kick against Diego Maradona’s Napoli late on in the campaign.

The German appeared as a guest on Inter Media House’s special program celebrating 30 years since the club’s record-breaking league triumph.

“I said from the moment I joined Inter that I hadn’t come to finish third or fourth, I wanted to win,” Matthaus said.

“Milan were a great team that season but we had a big heart and that’s how we won the league.

“Maradona was the greatest player of all at that time but we had great players too. I was convinced we were one of the favourites for the Scudetto.

“Aldo Serena guaranteed you 25 goals every season, and you all saw what Andreas Brehme did for Inter.”
