Inter-bound Edin Dzeko could already have joined the Nerazzurri three years ago, as Tuttosport recalled today.

Roberto Mancini was in charge at the time and had identified the Bosnian as a replacement for Mauro Icardi, having already managed him at Manchester City.

Inter endured a difficult summer in 2016 as talks over Mauro Icardi’s contract extension got out of hand, with Napoli making a series of lucrative offers.

Maurito ultimately stayed put and Inter did not step up their pursuit for Dzeko, but the 33-year-old is poised to make the move after all this year.

Dzeko also came close to signing for Inter’s rivals Milan in the summer of 2009, having helped guide Wolfsburg to the Bundesliga title that season.

Adriano Galliani flew to Sarajevo to agree personal terms with the striker but the Rossoneri eventually decided to sign Klaas-Jan Huntelaar instead.

Dzeko scored 14 goals and created 11 assists in all competitions for Roma in the 2018-19 campaign, as the Giallorossi finished sixth in Serie A.
