Inter bound Diego Godin was in tears as he spoke to journalists following Uruguay’s elimination from the Copa America following a 5-4 penalty defeat to Peru at the quarter-final stage of the tournament.

“I had a lot of enthusiasm and desire to move forward, but we did not succeed,” he explained to the gathered media following the match at the Fonte Nova Arena.

“We tried our hardest but we missed three big chances and towards the end, there was no strength left. I thank the people, I thank the supporters, they have given us a lot, not only today, but always.”

The veteran central defender concluded: “I am proud of my teammates, this is a spectacular group of players.”

Godin is understood to have already agreed terms with Inter to join the club on a free transfer once his contract with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid expires at the end of today and an official announcement is expected shortly.
