Borja Valero’s return to Fiorentina fell through because the Inter midfielder’s wages are too high, the Viola’s sporting director Daniele Prade confirmed today.
Vincenzo Montella was reportedly keen to bring the Spaniard back to Florence, who left to join the Nerazzurri for around €6 million in 2017.
Prade helped Montella sign Valero from Villarreal seven years ago, but he has closed the door on any potential deal.
“There was a possibility we could resign him, for sure,” Prade told reporters in a press conference earlier.
“Borja’s wages are not in line with our club policy, though.”
Valero made 38 appearances in all competitions for Inter last season, helping Luciano Spalletti’s side secure Champions League football for the second year running.
The 34-year-old provided just one assist, during a 3-0 win over Lazio in October, and was frequently criticised by supporters for playing too slowly.
He played 212 matches for Fiorentina during his five seasons with the club.
