Inter and Milan will officially submit a planning application for a new San Siro stadium next week, the mayor of Milan confirmed today.

Both clubs want to knock down the current ground and build a more modern version on the same land.

However, the city council would prefer them to renovate San Siro and avoid several years of construction work.

“I’ll ask my colleagues to decide whether their project is coherent with our rules and regulations as a council,” Giuseppe Sala was reported as saying by Ansa.

“Representatives from both clubs have visited us before bringing over their plans, and they explained why they believe building a new stadium is the best solution.

“The risk for them with renovating the current San Siro is that they would have to spend a long period of time playing in a stadium where construction work is taking place.

“There are examples of cities where that happens, though.”

Reports last week suggested Inter and Milan wanted to start work in 2021 and open the new stadium in either 2024 or 2025.
