Inter could only sign Arturo Vidal from Barcelona if the Catalans accepted a swap deal with Radja Nainggolan, according to Sport Mediaset.
The Chilean costs €15 million and is not a key figure in Ernesto Valverde’s plans for this season, but Inter cannot sign him unless Nainggolan leaves.
Nainggolan has an offer from Inter’s sister club Jiangsu Suning but the 30-year-old is not interested, meaning a swap is the Nerazzurri’s only hope.
Vidal played four of Chile’s five matches at this summer’s Copa America, where La Roja were beaten in a penalty shoot-out by Peru in the semi-finals.
Inter stand a far better chance of signing Nicolò Barella then they do Vidal and the club could meet Cagliari for fresh talks on Monday.
The Nerazzurri are open to increasing their current offer, worth €36+4 million, but they will not meet Tommaso Giulini’s €50 million asking price.
Inter are also in daily contact with Romelu Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello as they prepare a new offer for Manchester United.
Lukaku wants to join up with Antonio Conte and will get his wish if the Red Devils accept an expensive loan with an option to buy, which would become an obligation if certain conditions are met.
