Inter’s chief executive Beppe Marotta will meet Manchester United this week in a bid to secure a deal for Romelu Lukaku, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Belgian flew out to Australia ahead of the Red Devils’ preseason tour at the weekend but remains determined to sign for the Nerazzurri.

Marotta hopes he can obtain a discount on United’s €83 million asking price, which Inter are unlikely to be able to afford.

Antonio Conte had hoped the 26-year-old would be signed in time to start preseason training today, but he will have to work with Mauro Icardi for now.

Reports in England last week suggested Lukaku could be left out of United’s squad for their trip to the other side of the world.

However, Gazzetta assured his presence on the plane changed nothing in terms of Inter’s bid to sign him.

Conte held his first press conference as Inter’s head coach yesterday and will take charge of his first friendly against Lugano on Sunday.
