Inter have appeared to receive a boost for their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku, after the striker was left out of Manchester United’s squad for their friendly against Leeds United.

The Red Devils’ manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had assured reporters previously he was ready to count upon the Belgian, who is keen to join the Nerazzurri as soon as possible.

Something has evidently changed, however, because Lukaku will not even appear on the substitutes’ bench for the preseason friendly in Perth.

Anthony Martial was with Lukaku last week when the pair missed training to work in the gym, but the French forward is on the bench as normal.

It remains to be seen whether this is a clue which helps us understand where talks are at, or whether Solskjaer simply did not want to count upon Lukaku while his mind was elsewhere.

Manchester United’s XI to play Leeds (4-3-3): Romero; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Bailly, Rojo; McTominay, Pogba, Greenwood; Mata, James, Rashford.

Substitutes: J. Pereira, Dalot, Jones, Smalling, Tuanzebe, Young, Andreas, Garner, Matic, Gomes, Lingard, Martial.
