Inter and Milan’s intention to reduce San Siro’s capacity goes against an established trend among top European clubs, Tuttosport reported this morning.
The new stadium is expected to hold 63,000 fans if plans are approved, marking a decrease of 15,275 on San Siro’s current capacity of 78,275.
This represents a 20% cut for supporters, but Inter and Milan want to do it because very few modern stadiums exceed 65,000 seats.
“It’s true those are the attendances clubs have more and more, but there is one big difference,” the paper explained.
“If you look at all the stadiums built by top European clubs in the last few years, you can see how the tendency is to increase its capacity and not to reduce it.”
Tottenham, Atletico Madrid, Ajax, Arsenal and Bayern Munich were the clubs cited as examples of this, while Barcelona are also planning to revamp the Camp Nou soon.
Inter and Milan submitted a Technical and Economic Feasibility Study to the Municipality of Milan last week and must now wait to find out if their plans for the new San Siro are approved.
