Inter are increasingly pessimistic about their chances of signing Romelu Lukaku from Manchester United, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Antonio Conte wants him to spearhead the Nerazzurri’s attack this season while United are open to the idea of selling the Belgian.

However, despite Lukaku’s absence from yesterday’s preseason friendly against Leeds, talks remain very difficult because of the Red Devils’ €83 million asking price.

“Inter have not formally approached United again since last week because they know any offer will be rejected,” Gazzetta reported this morning.

“Lukaku chose Inter a long time ago and is the forward Conte imagined for his new side, though, so Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio owe it to both to try everything in search of a deal.”

Lukaku remains keen to join the Nerazzurri and is keeping himself informed with negotiations, but Inter cannot offer what United want unless they can sell Mauro Icardi.

United do not currently have any other offer on the table, which could potentially help Marotta and Ausilio, but unless they drop their asking price it will make little difference.

“Inter have no option but to consider alternative targets if things stay like this,” the paper concluded.
