Inter’s bid to sign Romelu Lukaku from Manchester United has divided opinion among some of the Nerazzurri’s former players.
Beppe Bergomi, Riccardo Ferri and Salvatore Bagni all encouraged the club today to sign the striker despite United’s lofty asking price.
Nicola Berti wants Inter to prioritise signing Edin Dzeko, though, while Roberto Boninsegna would rather give Mauro Icardi a second chance.
“Lukaku costs too much and I would rather do everything to rebuild bridges with Mauro, who remains one of the best strikers in Europe,” Bonimba told Gazzetta dello Sport.
Icardi is training alone at Appiano Gentile after being excluded from Inter’s preseason tour in Asia.
Antonio Conte seems unwilling to reopen the door for the club’s former captain, having chosen Lukaku as his new centre-forward.
“The debate around Lukaku’s price tag is relative, because he’s perfectly suited to Conte’s style of play for power and physicality,” Bergomi assured.
“Everyone knows Lukaku is Inter’s first choice and that doesn’t help, but he would help them to win things,” Bagni added.
Ferri said: “Conte knows Lukaku very well and he knows what he could provide. I trust his and the club’s judgement.”
