Diego Godin is only the latest in a long line of no-nonsense defenders to have represented Inter, as discussed by Gazzetta dello Sport today.

The ‘sheriff’ joined from Atletico Madrid at the start of July and began training with his new teammates last week.

The paper took a stroll down memory lane for Nerazzurri supporters and chronicled all the strongest players they have enjoyed at the back.

Gazzetta wrote: “Going from the start and not wanting to offend anyone, we’d have to begin with the Picchi-Guarnieri partnership, which along with Burgnich made the Grande Inter side so impenetrable in the sixties.

“In the team that won the 1969-70 Serie A title you then had two stoppers in the form of Bellugi and Giubertoni, who played in front of Burgnich while he was a libero.

“The title-winning XI in 1980 was characterised by the likes of Bini, Mozzini, Canuti and Catellani, and then in Giovanni Trapattoni’s record-breaking side of 1989 you had Andrea Mandorlini behind Riccardo Ferri and Beppe Bergomi.

“Inter’s most recent great defenders include Mihajlovic, Burdisso, Samuel, Lucio and Materazzi, whose achievements all speak for themselves.

“It’s also incredible to think that players such as Collovati, Passarella, Blanc and Cannavaro have passed through the club without winning anything.”
