Beppe Marotta appeared to change his tune somewhat on Inter’s transfer plans today, having attended Serie A’s fixture ceremony in Milan.

Following last week’s summit in China with the Nerazzurri’s owners Suning, Marotta told reporters Inter were in no hurry to complete Antonio Conte’s squad for the new season.

However, when intercepted by FcInter1908 tonight, he seemed to suggest the club could no longer afford to play a long game in their talks for Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku.

“We know we need to complete the squad quickly, because the coach is quite rightly asking to have all his players available so he can continue his work,” Marotta said.

“I’m not going to give you any names, but the market still hasn’t come to life yet. The fact it’s so long this year means player trading is much slower. Let’s see what happens in the coming days.”

Marotta kept his cards close to his chest when asked about Mauro Icardi, who is expected to rejoin the first team for training on Wednesday.

He added: “We haven’t scheduled anything for him. He’s our player and we’ve expressed ourselves clearly about him.

“We’re not only concentrated on him, but also on the players who need to complete our squad.”

Inter’s fixture schedule will see them face AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina on week four of the new season.

Marotta suggested it would arrive at the right moment for Conte’s new-look side, just after Inter’s first Champions League group stage match.

“We’ll be into our stride by the fourth match. We’ll be the ‘away’ team and it’ll be great,” Marotta continued.

“I think it’s more important to take a wider view, though. The premises for this season are good under Conte.

“We still need to do a bit to adjust the squad, but we’ll do it.”
