Inter are waiting on a response from Edinson Cavani’s entourage as they study alternative options to Romelu Lukaku, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Nerazzurri have offered El Matador a three-year deal worth €9 million net annually, the same salary they are prepared to give Lukaku.

Cavani would also have the chance to continue his career in China thereafter by joining Inter’s sister club, Jiangsu Suning.

“Inter were meant to get an answer yesterday, but for technical reasons Cavani’s response on whether he is open to leaving PSG was delayed,” Gazzetta reported this morning.

“That doesn’t mean he has said ‘no’, they just need to wait.”

Conte still holds out hope of bringing Lukaku to San Siro, but Cavani’s arrival would alleviate the pain of missing out on the Belgian again.

The former Napoli striker is less of a dominating physical presence than Lukaku, but he would guarantee more goals than his Manchester United counterpart.

Lukaku has only moved close to 25 goals in a season on two occasions whereas Cavani has done so consistently, and unlike the PSG man he has no experience of playing in Serie A, meaning he would need time to adapt.

“Inter would need to serve Cavani closer to the penalty area than Lukaku, but he has qualities Conte very much likes,” Gazzetta explained.

“He’s strong physically, willing to work for the team and capable of running over long distances, which would help Inter transition quickly.”

Cavani is not as able with his back to goal and would need to be given the ball in space rather than to his feet, but this could make him more suited to playing alongside Edin Dzeko.

He would also find two trusty allies in the Nerazzurri’s dressing room, with two of his international teammates in Diego Godin and Matias Vecino already on their books.
