Ivan Zamorano trusts Inter to have made the right choice in freezing Mauro Icardi out of the club this summer.

Icardi rejoined first-team training this week after missing the Nerazzurri’s tour in Asia, but the striker appears to have no future under Antonio Conte.

Zamorano assured gianlucadimarzio.com that the decision to discard Icardi would not have been made in haste.

“There always comes a moment at a big club where you have to make a decision to improve the team,” the Nerazzurri’s former striker said.

“From what I’ve understood, Inter have opted to distance themselves from Icardi because the dressing room, the management and the backroom staff all thought that should happen.

“Only those who work at Inter will know just how necessary this decision was. Players come and go but the club remains.

“For that reason, the good of the team must always be given priority over everything else.”

Zamorano then backed Icardi’s teammate Lautaro Martinez to explode under Conte’s guidance this season.

The ex-Chile international added: “I have a lot of faith in him. If he stays healthy both mentally and physically then he can become the great striker Inter need at the moment.

“Centre-forwards need consistent game-time and Lautaro didn’t get that last year. However, Conte is very good at valorising young players and I’m sure he will benefit from that.”
