Radja Nainggolan’s unsuccessful debut campaign at Inter was defended by one of the club’s former forwards today.

Angelo Domenghini won two league titles with the Nerazzurri in the 1960s before moving to Cagliari, where the Ninja is expected to return on loan.

Nainggolan suffered various problems of both a physical and disciplinary nature last year, but Domenghini said it was unfair to single him out for criticism.

“Everyone failed at Inter last season, not just him,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

“There might be some controversy around Radja but there were other players who did worse than him.”

Nainggolan is due to complete his loan move back to Cagliari in the next couple of days, having already spent four years with the Rossoblu.

Domenghini said the midfielder had let his heart decide and wasn’t surprised he wanted to return.

“When players leave Sardinia they always want to come back,” he assured.

“Cagliari is a stupendous city with exceptional supporters, where football is treated with less exasperation than in other places.”

Domenghini also expressed sympathy with Antonio Conte as Inter’s new boss waits for the club to trim his bloated squad.

He said: “Inter are putting a good team together, but now they need to sell. How are you supposed to coach a team when you have 35 players in your squad?

“Regardless, I think they’ll need to be strong in defence and in midfield. I don’t know if Conte will make them play good football but Inter will need to be consistent throughout the season.”
