Flamengo’s vice-president last night confirmed the Brazilian club were keen on signing Inter forward Gabriel Barbosa permanently.

Gabigol is on loan until 31 December and has rediscovered his form back home, scoring twice in a Copa Libertadores last 16 victory over Emelec last week.

Inter need €15 million to avoid making a net loss on the forward, who recently extended his contract with the Nerazzurri through to 2022.

“Our intention is to sign Gabgiol, but we have not yet moved in that direction,” Marcos Braz was quoted as saying by Lance.

“We had a great transfer window at the beginning of the year. We’re reshaping our squad and we need to remain calm on the market.”

Reports in Italy last week suggested Inter wanted to recall Barbosa from his loan spell early, in order to sell him elsewhere this month.

Flamengo would be due 5% of any transfer fee the Nerazzurri received in that instance, although there is no guarantee this will happen yet.

Various sources claimed Gabigol’s wage demands are discouraging all potential suitors, with the 22-year-old reported to be requesting €4 million annually.
