Mauro Icardi can leave Inter for free next summer if the Nerazzurri freeze him out of their squad this season, as explained by Corriere dello Sport today.

The striker is training at Appiano Gentile at present but will not be part of Antonio Conte’s plans over the next nine months.

If Inter do not use him in at least 10% of their matches this year, however, they will risk losing their former captain for nothing.

Article 15 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players states: “An established professional who has, in the course of the season, appeared in fewer than ten per cent of the official matches in which his club has been involved may terminate his contract prematurely on the ground of sporting just cause.

“Due consideration shall be given to the player’s circumstances in the appraisal of such cases. The existence of sporting just cause shall be established on a case-by-case basis.

“In such a case, sporting sanctions shall not be imposed, though compensation may be payable. A professional may only terminate his contract on this basis in the 15 days following the last official match of the season of the club with which he is registered.”

Inter remain hopeful for this reason that they can resolve Icardi’s future before the transfer window closes, but they face an uphill battle.

Icardi has told his family he will not leave Milan for another city, although he would make an exception for Juventus given the short distance.

Beppe Marotta would like to sell him either to Napoli or Roma, but these destinations do not seem to be of interest for Maurito.

Juve could nevertheless secure the 26-year-old if they made a big offer during the next four weeks.
