Antonio Conte was compared to Jose Mourinho today as Inter’s new boss continues to whip up excitement among supporters.

Fernando Orsi, who worked as Roberto Mancini’s assistant during his first spell in charge of the Nerazzurri, suggested the Special One was the last head coach who had generated this much enthusiasm upon his arrival in Milan.

Conte has overseen a series of impressive preseason performances against Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham, with Inter drawing all three and winning the latter pair on penalties.

“The excitement, the expectation and the curiosity for such an appointment can be seen clearly from the earthquake Inter supporters have caused on social media,” Orsi wrote in a Tuttosport column this morning.

“This sort of frenzy among fans makes one thing clear, though, or rather that Conte will have a little more to prove than the coaches who have preceded him.

“After a turbulent start Inter supporters are slowly starting to believe that Conte could mark a huge turning point in their bid to end Juventus’ dominance in Italy, or at least to repair some of the damage caused in recent years.

“However, he’s not a miracle worker and Inter will have to complete a squad that still looks fairly bare in certain departments.”

Orsi said Inter were already playing as Conte wanted in preseason, demonstrating a desire to fight for every loose ball and operate an ‘asphyxiating’ high press.

But he also warned the club that the former Chelsea and Italy boss would not hold back in his criticism if Inter did not recruit the players he wanted in the transfer market.

“Let’s remember Conte delivered a fairly agitated press conference only 10 days ago,” Orsi recalled, referring to Conte’s harsh comments about Inter’s lack of activity before the defeat to Manchester United.

“They need to get a move on and complete this squad before their head coach loses his patience again.”
