Inter’s former striker Diego Forlan announced his retirement from football at the age of 40 on Wednesday.

Forlan made just 20 appearances in one season with the Nerazzurri, scoring in a 4-3 defeat to Palermo and a 2-2 draw against Catania.

He helped Atletico Madrid win the Europa League in 2010 and was part of the Uruguay side that reached the World Cup semi-finals later that year.

Forlan tweeted: “After 21 years I’ve decided to end my career as a professional footballer. I’m finishing a nice chapter full of great memories and emotions, but now I’ll start another full of new challenges.”

He also had spells in Europe with Manchester United and Villarreal, before finishing his career with Kitchee in the Hong Kong Premier League.
