Napoli will end their interest in Mauro Icardi if they do not get a response from the Inter striker before Thursday, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Partenopei have offered an annual salary worth €7.5 million after tax and are prepared to give Inter €65 million for their former captain.

But Icardi’s entourage are continuing to play for time with Aurelio De Laurentiis, forcing Napoli to begin talks with Fernando Llorente as a back-up plan.

“Napoli haven’t received any kind of answer from Icardi since they got in touch a few days ago,” GdS reported this morning.

“Talks have not explicitly stopped, but there is an excruciating silence between the parties which is becoming embarrassing as time passes.”

Icardi’s waiting game with Napoli is thought to be further confirmation of his desire to only consider a move to Juventus.

The forward has already rejected offers from Roma and Monaco, who offered €8 million net per season to him and €60 million to Inter.

Inter would gladly send Icardi to Juventus if they could sign Paulo Dybala as part of a swap deal, but that remains ‘a fantasy’ with two weeks of the window left.

Icardi now runs a serious risk of staying at Inter and being forced to remain on the side-lines for an entire season, having been discarded by everyone at the club.
