Inter’s vice-president Javier Zanetti is convinced Alexis Sanchez will become a key player for the Nerazzurri this season.
Sanchez joined on a season-long loan from Manchester United yesterday and is hoping to be involved in Sunday’s Serie A match away to Cagliari.
Zanetti told Fox Sports Chile he was certain the forward’s experience and skill set would prove hugely useful to Antonio Conte’s side.
“I’m happy about his arrival because I believe he’s an important player who makes a difference to his teams,” Pupi said after yesterday’s Champions League group stage draw in Monaco.
“Alexis brings qualities which Inter didn’t have up front and will complete our attacking options with Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku.
“Negotiations with United were difficult but this is part of the transfer window. I hope he has a great season.”
Conte is widely reported to be seeking a last-minute deal for Sanchez’s Chile teammate Arturo Vidal and Zanetti refused to deny the rumours.
“There isn’t much time left in this summer’s window, these are questions for our transfer officials,” he said.
“I can assure you we’re happy with what we’ve done so far, but when our directors get the scent of a deal they rarely let it slip through their fingers.”
Zanetti also provided an interesting answer when asked why Inter had enjoyed so much success with Chilean players throughout their history.
He added: “They’ve all made their mark here. Chileans are very passionate and have great self-confidence. They’re characterised by their South American ‘garra’ and that always emerges in moments of difficulty.”
On Inter’s tough Champions League group, which has pitted Conte’s side against Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Slavia Prague, Pupi said: “It’s an extremely hard one. Barcelona are a great opponent who aim to win the tournament every year, but we can compete with everyone.
“We’ve built a team full of important players and now with Conte it’s time for us to start a new period of our history.”
