Following a series of racist incidents in football in recent weeks, world football’s governing body have hit out and condemned it.

Inter striker Romelu Lukaku became the latest player to be subjected to racial abuse in Sunday’s 2-1 victory away to Cagliari.

As the Belgian was preparing to take a penalty, monkey chants were clearly audible from a portion of the Cagliari support behind the goals.

“Racism has no place in football,” Fifa’s statement is entitled.

“FIFA urges all member federations, leagues, clubs and sports courts to adopt the procedures provided, as well as showing zero tolerance for racist incidents in football, and to apply severe penalties provided for similar cases, starting with stopping the matches.”

Manchester United duo Paulo Pogba and Marcus Rashford are two other high profile players to have been racially abused in recent weeks with both players being targetted on social media.

The abuse has led to several calling for stricter controls on things such as social media to prevent such incidents occuring.
