Italian football federation president Gabriele Gravina has condemned the racist abuse Romelu Lukaku recieved in Inter’s match against Cagliari.

As the Belgian striker was readying himself to take a penalty – which he scored – there were audible monkey chants coming from a portion of Cagliari supporters behind the goal.

“This is a serious matter, regardless of the number of those who chanted them. Federcalcio is committed to making the sanctions the most stringent and quicker to apply,” he told news agency ANSA.

“I do not want to have to enter into the sports justice system which will proceed autonomously in compliance with the rules but the image offered by Italian football does not reflect the values we hold.”

In wake of the incident, Cagliari have come out and said they will be identifying and dealing with supporters judged to have taken part in the chants.

The Lega Serie A have meanwhile confirmed that they will be launching an anti-racism campaign next month.
