Romelu Lukaku would have the full support of teammates if he took the decision to walk off the field when racially abused his Belgian national team teammate Thomas Meunier is convinced.

Lukaku was subjected to monkey chants during Inter’s 2-1 victory over Cagliari at the weekend and all eyes are now on those at the top of Italian football to act.

“If Romelu were to say enough is enough and decided to leave the field, I’m sure the other players would follow him,” PSG defender Meunier told RTBF.

“A player who had been a victim of racist chanting left the field in France last year. This helped to raise awareness. It is necessary that there is no room at all left for racists.

“At PSG, we have players of all sorts of origins and I am sure that if a player who is a victim gives the signal, then the whole team would follow him off the field.”

Meunier also shared his views on the statement released by the Curva Nord, which claimed the abuse Lukaku was subjected to was not racist.

That statement is very bad news. You get the feeling that because the insult is so trivialised that everyone just lets it go. It is as if saying good morning and insulting someone have become the same thing. Racism must be fought against, full stop.”
