Former Inter defender Andrea Mandorlini, who played for the Nerazzurri for seven years between 1984 and 1991, spoke exclusively to Italian media outlet FcInter1908 about Inter’s chances of winning the title this year.

“There are many expectations. Obviously, we’re only at the first games, but it was important to get off to a good start. It’s a team I like because we’ve got a winning coach and we’ve had a high-level transfer market involving important players.”

“I like the team, but you have to wait until at least 5-6 games to see the real chances. Even if the teams that will fight until the end are already obvious: Juventus, Inter and Napoli.”

Mandorlini then spoke of the mentality change since Antonio Conte took the coaching role.

“The Italian championship won’t be too spectacular, but it’s very difficult, even on grounds like that of Cagliari’s. You have to be in the game all the time, even if you’re a technically stronger team. There were difficulties, but they were overcome thanks to Conte’s mentality.”

He then gave his thoughts about the Nerazzurri’s chances in the Champions League.

“We certainly weren’t very lucky. But you always have to play the games and I don’t think Inter will exit at the group stages this year, especially because of the change in mentality. The others may have something more from a technical point of view, but this year we’ll play for everyone.”

Finally, he spoke of Mauro Icardi’s departure from Inter.

“In my opinion it was the right decision for him to leave. It’s a shame because he scored so many goals, but we couldn’t do it anymore.”

“He was there more for Wanda Nara than anyone else. That’s enough. It’s right to take another path, even for the player, who went to play in an important club. Enough. One story ends and another story begins.”
