After Belgium’s 4-0 victory over San Marino in last night’s Euro 2020 qualifying match, Belgium coach Roberto Martinez explained the reason why he didn’t play Inter striker Romelu Lukaku.

“Lukaku had a difficult summer. I didn’t want him to play two games in four days, given the preparation and the trips he’s made so far; I don’t think it would have been a good idea to let him play.”

“Anyway, he’ll be in the squad for the game against Scotland for sure.”

The 26-year-old forward has had a flying start with the Nerazzurri, scoring two goals in two games to help Inter become one of the three teams with a perfect record after the first two games, alongside Juventus and Torino.

The striker has long been admired by coach Antonio Conte, with the coach attempting to sign the Belgian forward back when he managed Chelsea, and Lukaku’s performances so far seem to legitimise Conte’s admirations.
