Between today and tomorrow, the European Club Association board will hold discussions over potential changes to the Champions League and other continental club competitions according to a report from Corriere dello Sport.

The ECA board wish to work out what the formula for the Champions League will be in five years time and it is understood that there is a lot of work to be done.

Competition organisers UEFA are keen to ensure that the appeal of the competition remains so that broadcasters continue to bid for the rights to host the matches and they are considering ways how to make it even more appealing.

One idea they have had is to extend the group stage phase of the tournament. Currently groups are contested by four clubs in eight groups but they could change it so that groups are played out between eight sides which would mean another eight group stage fixtures for participating sides compared to the current set-up.

Increasing the number of participating clubs in European club competitions is also a hot topic of conversation with Corriere dello Sport stating it could rise to 96 in 2021 and then 128 in 2024.

UEFA have formed a commission to discuss potential reform of the European competitions which is made up of eight representatives from eight member nations.

The report from the Rome based news outlet goes on to state that some of Europe’s top five leagues are not entirely sold on the idea of reform due to the potential affects it would have on their league scheduling.
