Legendary Inter player Sandro Mazzola has admitted that he would have ‘tried to recover’ Mauro Icardi rather than deal him away in the Summer transfer window.

Firstly, he spoke on Inter’s club record signing Romelu Lukaku.

“Lukaku is a player I really like. He will not be an Icardi-like striker who scores 25 goals per season but he should still score lots of goals. The fact he will score less is compensated by the great work he does for the team. His movement is great for the midfielders who will score more goals as a result,” he told FCInterNews.it.

He then proceeded to speak very highly of new Inter manager Antonio Conte.

“Inter are at the same level of Juventus and that is thanks to the arrival of an extraordinary coach in Antonio Conte, a serial winner, who together with the signings of Lukaku, Godin and Sensi, has helped Inter fill the gap.

“His Juventus past doesn’t matter as he is an exceptional professional that makes everyone better. His arrival is worth an extra 10 points in the standings. He is someone who puts everyone in line. He has the same intelligence and cunning nature at Jose Mourinho, they are very similar.”

He then spoke on the Mauro Icardi saga and what he would have done differently.

“I would have tried to recover him in spite of the many problems that have arisen, there are few strikers as deadly as him in front of goal. I would have called him up for the tour and had him play in a friendly match. He could still be important and he would have formed a great partnership with Lukaku.”
