The mayor of the City of Milan Beppe Sala, has suggested that Inter and AC Milan renovate the San Siro rather than build a new stadium, according to Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The City would prefer a restructuring of the San Siro to a new facility, however for AC Milan and Inter, a new facility is the only way.”

Sala then spoke of the cost of the operation.

“A radical restructuring of the current stadium could be estimated at around €400 million, with lower costs than the at least €600 million required for the construction of the new stadium (€1.2 billion overall). But there is no doubt that the direct and indirect economic benefits that would result from a system built from scratch are the reason why Milan and Inter have always preferred this option to that of restoration”

However, AC Milan and Inter are not convinced and still want to construct a new stadium rather than renovate the existing San Siro.

The American firm Populous are ahead in the race to win the project, with American-Italian group Channel-Cmr the next likely.
