Former AC Milan and Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi spoke to Milano based newspaper la Gazzetta dello Sport today about the duel between Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri and Inter coach Antonio Conte for the title.
When asked to describe the two coaches, Sacchi spoke of a similar philosophy.
“From a technical and character point of view, the two are very different even though they have the same philosophy: the game must be the team’s guide and the players improve if they follow the plot. They’re both screenwriters: they write the film and their men play it, free to add their qualities of fantasy and unpredictability.”
Sacchi then compared Conte to Sarri.
“Compared to Sarri, he’s less patient. His game is more immediate, he creates less pressure and, consequently, his teams are a bit more spread out. An example: The Inter who won in Cagliari, when they had to defend, went back instead of taking a step forward and attacking the enemy.”
The 73-year-old former Milan manager didn’t think this was the right tactic.
“I don’t think it’s wise. It’s said in my area that you don’t bring a gravedigger home: you don’t allow your opponent to get close to the goal. But Inter have long been a team that has been improving, they need time to change their mentality.”
Finally, Sacchi stated that he believes Sarri’s job at Juventus to be more difficult than Conte’s at Inter.
“Sarri’s work is definitely more difficult, and I’ll explain why. He arrived in a team that won everything and now he has to propose a completely different kind of football. It means that you have to convince the players first of all, get them on your side and let them participate in the project. The role of the club will be decisive, especially in times of difficulty that there will inevitably be. That’s the way it was for me at AC Milan. But, I repeat, if Juve succeeds in this revolution, Italian football will derive enormous benefits from it because the Bianconeri players can teach and lead others.”
