After last night’s victory over Udinese, Inter coach Antonio Conte spoke to Italian media outlet Sky Sports.
“I’m happy about Sensi’s goal. Stefano is a young man who sees football, understands it and this also allows him to find alternative solutions like those of today with 3-4-2-1. He’s happy because he succeeds in what he feels. But we lacked the cynicism to close the game. Udinese confirmed everything I said, so we had to be careful not to concede after half time: congratulations to Tudor.”
Conte then spoke of his three-man defence.
“We were once surprised by Lasagna in the second half: the only one we had, even though it could have cost us dearly. Godin is one of those penalised by injury at the beginning of the pre-season, he hadn’t played a whole game in two months, but I’m happy and let’s not forget that the assist for the goal is his. Diego didn’t play with the same frequency as the other central players. We must also be proud of a tough victory.”
The Italian also discussed the most important margins of improvement for the Nerazzurri.
“I’ve been clear with the guys: this year, who will face Inter, will play against us. We’ll have to be good at creating situations and superiority. That’s why we’re working so hard on the three defenders. We can also improve on a lot more. I’m curious to see where we are with everyone, since for various reasons some have never played with us in the pre-season like Godin, but also Lazaro and Sanchez. We’re testing the guys in the official games. Lazaro, we have never really seen him in the game, Sanchez himself must be verified. It’s also important to have tested another tactical alternative. All the guys have given us great willingness, great desire.”
The Inter coach responded to the comments on his substitution usage in the game.
“I wanted to keep the initial tactical set-up because we’re working on it. We have a three-way defence, but it’s always an active defence and that’s demonstrated by Godin’s assist, 30 metres from the opponent’s goal. I replaced Barella because he was booked, while Lukaku had a problem with his back in the warm-up and that’s why he wasn’t so brilliant. We can’t think of changing our work: we can be offensive even with what we’re working on.”
Finally, Conte spoke of Inter’s position in the league table.
“We think the same as before. Three tough wins and so it will be from here to the end of the championship. Beyond the result, the fans must be happy because the team gave 100%. We’re on the ground: we have to do great things, but the others have to make disasters [to win the title].”
