Inter chief executive Alessandro Antonello has provided an update on Inter and AC Milan’s proposed new stadium that will replace San Siro.
“We are not imposing anything but we want to revitalise the whole San Siro area. The restructuring of the Meazza was the priority for us initially but the in-depth analysis revealed it would be difficult to achieve so we then went down a different path,” he said in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.
Antonello then discussed the city council’s proposal for the Milanese clubs to buy San Siro for €70 million.
“It was correct to put San Siro on the table but when it comes to restructuring it, it would have lost many of the elements that give it its character today. Each stage of the construction was independent from the others. We would have had to completely dismantle the first tier and also the third tier.”
He then proceeded to discuss the proposed new stadium.
“All four of the original projects were interesting. The remaining two in the running are playing on equal terms, they have the same posibilities. The winning project will have to be an exciting one and the choice made will have to be rational.
“Today we have presented an architectural hypothesis of the project and we are ready to absorb what is said. We really believe in this project which is why we are going ahead and showing the work of architectural firms and investing at our own risk.
“I hope for Milan and for Italy that such a project can be approved: we have made a proposal and we do not want to enter the political debate, but now it is up to the city council to decide.”
