Inter chief executive Alessandro Antonello has explained the importance of both Inter and AC Milan’s plans to build a new stadium.
“It is important that two global clubs such as ourselves want to invest in our city with a project that is aimed at serving the future generations. It is a project for Milan and its citizens, not just for the fans who will go to the stadium,” he told the gathered media at the press conference.
He was then asked why the clubs current ground San Siro cannot be renovated.
“The lack of interconnection between the various parts of San Siro created a lot of inconveniences. Today the stadium has 24,000 square metres post match space, today the benchmark at European level is 100,000 square metres.
“The second reason is visibility. The first tier limits visibility and fans cannot see what happens in terms of displays in the rest of the stadium. In the third tier it is not very comfortable. The spaces between rows are limited and with new regulations, they would all need to be changed.
“Finally, there is a problem with services. Those who attend the games have no suitable services for what Milan deserves.
“We spent a lot of time studying a possible renovation. The first tier would need to be completely redone and work would need done on the third tier and the towers in the corners. By the end of the renovation, San Siro would be unrecognisable.
“Also, if we were to renovate San Siro, we would be obliged to ask the fans to migrate to stadiums located between 100 and 200 km with capacities lower than that of San Siro. The discomfort would be very important also from an economic point of view. Even for us as a club, moving from Milan would have an economic impact.”
