Former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli has shared his views on Inter and AC Milan’s planned new stadium and the future of San Siro.

“I would like to say something clear: I agree with Inter and AC Milan about them wanting to build a modern and efficient new stadium that will come with significant increases to revenue,” he said in an interview with Tuttosport.

“We all want a new stadium, football goes on and we know full well that new stadiums increase the economic income of a club, you just have to look at Juventus with their stadium. Having said this, San Siro cannot be touched.

“We are not just talking about football or the city of Milan. It is something that hurts the heart. People write me on social media telling me they would chain themselves to the fences. Everyone I have spoken to is for the new stadium but does not want San Siro torn down.”

“San Siro is the most important stadium in the world, for its history, charm and the two teams that have played in it all these years. When you enter San Siro, it takes your breath away.”

He concluded: “I am sure that the Milan administration agrees with me. If I have to make an appeal, I say: “Let’s build the new stadium, I will come to lend a hand to lay the first stones but we must respect San Siro and its great history.”
