Milan mayor Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Sala has spoken on Inter and AC Milan’s new stadium project following the official presentation on Thursday.
“I have asked the teams for complete transparency from the beginning but I will not comment on the projects. I am very nostalgic about San Siro and I am saying this as a fan and not a mayor,” he said in an interview with ALANews.
“It seems to me that we are going towards a different path and it has been made unequivocally clear that the teams want a new stadium and do not consider the restructuring option feasible. It is their right to make us a proposal and our duty to demand they have respect for the rules. If they decide to go to Sesto San Giovanni we could not say anything but I hope that they stay in the San Siro area.”
He then spoke on what this all means for Italy’s 2026 Winter Olympics as San Siro was expected to host the opening ceremony.
“We will discuss it later, in the dossier it is clearly expressed that it should be San Siro: the IOC wanted guarantees on the presence of San Siro.”
