Project manager for Inter’s proposed new stadium with city rivals AC Milan Mark Van Huuksloot has revealed that renovating San Siro would still not have made it the ideal stadium for the demands of modern day football.

The two clubs are ploughing on with plans to build a new state of the art stadium which will be accompanied by a large-scale redevelopment of the surrounding area including entertainment and leisure areas.

“Our goal is to redevelop urban places with long-term strategy and vision. Restructuring San Siro would have been a difficult operation that would have presented a whole load of limitations,” he said in an interview with AskaNews.

“The Meazza was built in the 1920s and very little of the historic San Siro would be the same if it were to be renovated again. The end result would still not be ideal for the needs of a stadium in the present day. The new stadium is an investment that serves above all, Italy.”

The report from AskaNews goes on to state that there is presently some scepticism from city councillors regarding the Milanese plans and due to this, the first deadline of October 10, a date where the public interest had to be declared, could be pushed back.

Democratic party leader Filippo Barberis stressed that he and fellow party members do not see a new stadium as being as financially viable or sensible as restructuring San Siro would be.
