Inter legend Alessandro Altobelli has shared his thoughts on Inter off the back of this past weekend’s Derby D’Italia of the season, which saw Inter lose domestically for the first time.

“Inter is doing well in the league and against Juventus on Sunday they did nothing wrong. Some elements among the Nerazzurri did not respond as expected, perhaps due to having one less day to rest, but no excuses should be sought. It was not the Inter that we are used to seeing but now we have to start big again,” he said in an interview with FCInter1908.it.

“Inter have the strongest defence in the world right now, have several international players in the midfield and Lautaro Martinez is doing very well up front. Let’s not forget that this team was only born this year unlike Juventus, who have been winning for eight years. Juventus are ahead but Inter are closing the gap.”

He was then asked what he has made of Inter’s Summer recruits.

“I had already seen Godin, Barella and Sensi in the past but with Conte they have impressed me even more. This is why I say that we are approaching the top of the class. In these first months of Conte’s tenure, Inter have recovered years of disadvantages.”

He then came to the defence of Romelu Lukaku who has been criticised for his performance against Juventus.

“Lukaku has scored and done well so far in his time with Inter. When a player wears the Nerazzurri shirt all Inter players must support him. Let’s not forget that he was injured, he was not at 100%.”

In conclusion he was asked if he thinks Mauro Icardi will be bought permanently by PSG.

“We do not yet know what will happen, I can only reiterate that what happened is a pity, but it is a pity for him and not for Inter, who made their mind up.”
