Chelsea could well scupper Inter’s chances of trying to acquire Olivier Giroud in a low cost transfer in the upcoming January transfer window according to a report in today’s paper edition of L’Equipe.

Giroud has been identified by Inter management as a potential addition to bolster the team’s attacking department following the injury of Alexis Sanchez, which looks like it will keep him out for a number of months.

33-year-old Giroud’s deal with the Premier League club is due to expire at the end of the season and he has made it known in recent days that if his situation does not change with the club he could seek pastures new in January.

Whilst Chelsea may not stand in his way, they could take advantage of a clause in his contact which allows them to extend his contract by a further season which in turn would give them more bargaining power if clubs come in for him.

If they were to activate this clause, it would remain to be seen whether Inter would still be interested in signing Giroud.
