FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called for ‘stronger’ and ‘more effective’ ways of dealing with racism following yet another incident.

During England’s 6-0 rout of Bulgaria, several England players were clearly targeted by the home support and the game even had to be suspended twice in a bid to get the chants to cease.

This was just the latest in a long line of racist incidents in recent weeks and months in the footballing world with several Serie A players being targeted for abuse, including Inter striker Romelu Lukaku.

“So many times we say that there is no place for racism in football, yet we still face challenges in our sport as we do in society,” he is quoted as saying by Italian news agency ANSA.

“We will need the support of public authorities to identify and punish the guilty, but we will also need to think more broadly what to do to solve the problem. I ask the football governing bodies to join us and to think together about stronger and more effective ways to eradicate racism in football.”
